SBAC Interim Assessment Design Update
SBAC Updates
English Language Arts/Literacy Content Specifications claims:
The SBAC Content Specifications for ELA/Literacy have been through two rounds of review to obtain feedback from states and organizations. Governing State Leads have been invited to vote to approve the five ELA/Literacy Claims for the Content Specifications by December 5, 2011 (see attached

. The governing states are only voting on the
SBAC ELA/Literacy Claims
.
The additional information outlined in the SBAC Content Specifications will be used a guide for item development.
Note: SBAC will be releasing the Mathematics Content Specifications
for review and comment (Round 2) in early December 2011.
Local Education Agency representative nominated to provide feedback on the IT Systems Architecture:
Patrick Traynor, Ph.D., Assistant Superintendent, Student Assessment and Accountability Hesperia Unified School District was chosen as the California LEA representative to provide feedback on the SBAC IT Systems Architecture. The intent is to develop an LEA panel that has a variety of technical infrastructure sophistication and a diversity of urban, suburban, and rural areas. Dr. Traynor will participate in the official review and comment period for the December Final Review schedule for mid-December 2011.
SBAC Interim Assessment design update:
With the SBAC development and procurement activities well underway on the summative assessment, SBAC is now focusing attention on the design of the interim assessments. As part of a balanced assessment system, interim assessments can provide information about what students know and can do in relation to the Common Core State Standards throughout the year, allowing educators to adapt and make mid-course corrections. The SBAC design includes the development of optional, computer-adaptive interim assessments that can be administered at locally determined intervals. Just like the summative assessment, these interim assessments will include a variety of item types—selected-response, short constructed-response, extended constructed-response, and technology-enhanced items—as well as performance tasks. The interim item bank will be non-secure, making it accessible for both instruction and professional development.
